I know, the lingo is totally catch worthy, I am drooling over it kabse! And, the movie made such an impact that I wanted to put out a word about it. The youngies have connected to it on a deeper level and I get that I mean it is an under dog’s story and most of us can relate with the struggle. Every ambitious person feels the hunger and the fire inside which burns day in and day out. And oooo the depiction is so damn well! Hats off to the director Zoya Akhtar and the entire team! So here are 5 things that we all can learn from ‘Gully Boy’!

Success has many parents, failure is an orphan!

A dear one once shared this phrase and it kind of stayed with me since then. I have seen this to be true in many situations. And have the first-hand experience at this as well.  Murad (Ranveer Singh) ‘s character also is an example of this. I loved how the director portrayed the ambition and the fire inside him. So run, walk or crawl towards your goals no matter what! We all have things that we want to do, experience or own but cannot because maybe the present monetary reality doesn’t allow that. Let lack of money not be the reason for you to not live your dreams. Murad’s struggle is surely relatable to all the ambitious folks.

It is important who you spend your time with!

God, I cannot emphasize this enough. I also feel so damn helpless with this one :\ It is rightly said that you sort of become like the people you most spend your time with so choose your people wisely. Murad (Ranveer’s character), being a guy, luckily had no ‘permission problems’ like Safeena (Alia’s character) and most girls (me included)  in our country have. But, he was surrounded with people who never thought of growth. His family circumstances were worst, supremely dysfunctional and man, I feel for him! It is when he met and started spending time with MC Sher, he actually started growing and realised his potential. I would like to interpret Sher as his Guru. Earlier, Murad did not even realise he had it in him, he discovered it. He was someone who wanted others to perform his songs because he thought he wasn’t worthy of it. Company matters. Period.

Your situations do NOT define your worth!

Not matter what mess you are in right now, your situations do not define you. It is hard to think that way for now but seriously, shifting your mind-set is important. I have experienced it that negative thinking can go on in loop sometimes and it is damn saddening, it takes you further down! Murad’s family situation sucked but thankfully he did not drown and had a breather in Safeena and his friends. His college and the other world was his rescue, have something like that for yourself too. Earlier I wasn’t strong enough but now, whenever I see the situations are dragging me down, I pick up my bag and go out for a walk without even asking anyone to break the loop of those thoughts.

Of all the people, at least you should not leave your back. Let other’s opinions or your circumstances NOT define your worth!

No one else can tell you what YOU are capable of !

I was heartbroken when one of my closest loved one once told me arrogantly that I cannot ever go ahead than him and will always remain small. I cried and cried and cried but I know for sure that THAT AIN’T TRUE! So, When Murad says… Koi Dusra Mereko Batayega Ki Mai Kon Hai? Fire!! So my dear reader, please let no one, I mean, no one tell you what YOU are capable of!

Freedom if suppressed finds ways to come out by hook or by crook!

Safeena (Alia’s Character) can be confusing for many but what Zoya wanted to show through her aggression and violence or the anger is that ‘it is her way of communication’ (according to one of her interviews) because that is what she has seen all her life! Her mother was violent and hit her so she was raised to believe that you can hit others to have your way. Her circumstances have made her super volcano like in nature which is wrong though but she cannot help it either. Her character is an epitome when it comes to showing what happens if a person’s freedom is suppressed!

  1. Nice blog Meghana… these 5 things are nicely put together and really we get to learn a lot out of it…. thanks for sharing…. your blogs are actually inspiring , positive, and makes me happy , feel good 😘😘

  2. Agreed, the part about breaking the negative loop I loved the most.
Thoroughly enjoyed the movie and performances by each and every member of the cast. Zoya’s grip on visual poetry made this an even more delightful cinematic experience. ..Apart from the research that must have gone into an unconventional and realistic subject like ‘rap scene in Mumbai’.

  3. Good observation Meghana…i want to add one more LINE: ..FOLLOW YOUR PASSION..Kalaki said to Ranveer. It doest matter where r u belong, place, cast and education.
