Sonakshi Sinha’s Akira is a painful truth | Not a movie review

Akira

Being a mass media student, I have always been aware about the power and influence of media and movies. The impact that audio visuals and especially the cinema has on individuals, is huge!

Today, I watched the first day first show of A. R. Murugadoss’s directorial AKIRA starring Sonakshi Sinha in the lead. Sonakshi essays the role of a fearless girl named Akira who single headedly fights all the badies and emerges out of all the pain and injustice.

As a regular cine goer, I expected it to be a kick-ass film where Sonakshi fights all the goons and saves the world like all other hero centric action films. But, after watching the flick, I was taken aback! I was surprised with how beautifully the movie is filmed.

I actually got depressed and cried for more than an hour brooding over Akira’s pain and all the injustice being done to her. Questions like – why is this happening to her? What is her fault? What would I do if I was in her place? and more, started flocking my mind. I was just waiting for the climax to show that there is no more trouble in Akira’s life and she finally is living a normal life. I was literally praying for everything to just settle down in her life even while knowing at the back of my mind that I am watching a film. The movie was so gripping and engrossing that I could not hold back my tears and feel for the brave girl.

But, there she was – Akira – who was kicking and hitting the baddies like it’s no body’s business. She was all alone enough to defend herself thanks to her thoughtful father who trained her in martial arts. There is a beautiful scene in the film that depicts breaking the stereotypes where the young Akira is made to learn self defence and martial arts over classical dancing.

Another scene that I cannot just take out of me is of the acid attack and eve-teasing sequence, where an innocent girl’s face and life is destroyed by a ruthless one sided lover. I have read heart wrenching letters and stories of acid attack survivors and man… they are brave! We cannot even imagine their pain and the strength that they have. Even a single pimple or scar on our face can make us restless, it is hard to imagine what they must be going through. It is painful. A rage of anger along with helplessness ran through me when I saw that scene. Made me ponder for hours about the situation and, my mind was looking for a solution that seemed blurred.

Sonakshi’s character was wronged and unlike many she stood up, she stood up and gave it back to them like a boss. Yes there were challenges, many challenges, but her strong willingness to come out of them, paved the way.

This is what I learn, as crying won’t help! Learning and moving on is a smarter way to live, rather than thinking of only the bad circumstances and situations. As life is a combination of both the black and the white. We can’t just choose one as we do not have the choice. But, yes one thing we CAN choose, and it is our attitude towards life. Being strong and fearless is a choice and not a quality that one owns. I am telling all this to myself more than to anybody else. I am happy that along with the pain, I am so inspired at this moment. Here is my salute all the brave girls who fought back!

  1. This sounds like such an inspiring movie! I don’t really watch many Bollywood films, mainly the classics but this movie sounds right up my street. i have so much respect for women that stand up for themselves and breaking down them stereotypes. Will definitely have to watch it 🙂
