Shraddha Kapoor and Aditya Roy Kapur’s Ok Jaanu Glamorizes Live-in Relationships
Live-in relationships are still a big deal in a developing country like India. But contradicting the previous line, todays’ urban youth is chill about the whole concept. Youth are accepting and following it whole heartedly. Metros like Mumbai, Bangalore and Delhi among other cities see many un-married couples living in together. As they say, films are inspired by real life. One such recently released film is Ok Jaanu starring Shraddha Kapoor and Aditya Roy Kapur.
This is not a movie review nor a movie bashing forum. Just that I watched the film and there were many things that did not seem right. Though, Shraddha and Aditya gave their best performances and looked gorgeous. Here are few of the many issues the film flaunts about live-in relationships.
They hurriedly fall in love and jump into the live-in scene:
Tara (Shraddha Kapoor) and Adi (Aditya Roy Kapur) meet in an impromptu situation. They fall in love so quickly that as if they will get less marks in a test if they don’t! Their love affair jumps into a live-in scenario in no time! Things move so rapidly in the film that you hardly get time to blink.
They are lucky enough to find a PG home which is chill AF:
I don’t really know where can, in real life, a live-in couple find a rented house like theirs. I live in Navi Mumbai and people (by people I mean the aunties majorly) have issues if a girl merely is seen with a guy often. The ‘log kya kahenge’ thing is not just a phrase but the truth hence is so bothersome to many. Many societies and house owners still hesitate to rent a room to unmarried couples.
What about the differences?
Tara and Adi hardly knew each other when they decide to live-in together. After living in together, spending so much time, days and nights together, the couple was not shown arguing over real issues even once. Like were their tastes, preferences, living habits etc. everything gelled so well? Unbelievable! You can’t even properly adjust with the habits of your family members and this is a new person altogether and there’s absolutely no issues shown. Upsetting! Films that feature similar subjects like Befikre and Katti Batti even had their fair share of scenes glimpsing reality.
Ok Jaanu only shows the perks of living together:
The parties, the fun, the kisses and sex. Is living in relationships only about this? While trying to render youthful energy to the film, the essence of it is somewhere missed. There are good parts that show Tara and Adi’s no strings attached relationship developing true affectionate bonding seeing the old couple’s unconditional love. There are downsides that only glorify living in together. No household chores, no worries about finances, nothing at all!
Shallow skim:
The duo live together for 6 months and do not even have one meaningful conversation. Like they just seem to roam around the city, party, have fun and make out and then make out more. And, it hurts when Adi utters the dialogue: “Tara, my biggest mistake!” after being with her for long enough.
Predictable ending:
After being in the cool live-in fad, they end up getting married! Yes, a part of me was happy but, c’mon the whole time they had opposing views and eventually behaved like good Indian children.
Let’s also talk about the good part:
The primary purpose of films is to entertain. People watch movies during the weekends majorly to get rid of their stress and have a relaxing time. This film does that. You come out of the theatre smiling 🙂 Ok Jaanu is a light-hearted rom-com and is an entertaining affair. The actors look great, wear awesome clothes, the backdrop is striking (beautiful sites of the Mumbai city are featured). The songs are already a hit! The songs like ‘Kaara Fankara’ can be played on loop. The performances of the lead pair as well as that of Naseeruddin Shah and Leela Samson are praise worthy.
