Lipstick Under My Burkha: Men stand up for women against the patriarchy!

Lipstick Under My Burkha

The coolest thing men can do for women is respect them. Respect them for who they are without wanting them to change or adhere to the Orthodox norms of the society. We live in a patriarchal world. From homes to corporate offices, the bias is witnessed, taken, tolerated and many times suppressed. But, to rebel against such norms, Balaji Motion Pictures’ upcoming film Lipstick Under My Burkha team started an online campaign called the “Lipstick Rebellion” where one has to flaunt their lipstick and show the support towards women rights. Initially, the film’s cast and crew including Konkona Sen Sharma, Ratna Pathak, Aahana Kumrah, Ekta Kapoor and Plabita Borthkur among others posed with their lipsticks, soon after the world followed.

The campaign went viral as lipstick selfies started pouring in from women across the globe including some eminent Bollywood personalities joining in. Now, the interesting bit comes when the men also joined the rebel. Yes, men from Bollywood as well as across the country posed with lipsticks and displayed their support for women. Nothing impresses as much as a man standing up for a woman despite the societal norms for her rights. Arjun Kapoor, Naseeruddin Shah and TV actor Karan Patel posed with lipstick and wrote striking captions that stole many hearts!

Karan Patel wrote:

#MenForLipstick let’s not forget that it takes a Woman to Make a Man .. a Son, a Husband, a Father, and all other titles that men can boast of. Im sure my buddies @rohitreddygoa @shabirahluwalia @kkundrra @alygoni Agree with me …! @ektaravikapoor thank you for teaching us that accepting a woman as equal is what makes a man a Real Man …!

Now, I don’t know how the movie will turn out and the exact message it will portray, however, it definitely seems to be a bold one. From the early updates and the super bold trailer, it definitely will hold several eyeballs. If you are a Bollywood buff, you may know that the film faced a lot of trouble from the censor board citing its content. But, finally, it received an ‘A’ certificate from the CBFC (Central Board of Film Certification).

Although, I am shit scared of mom and I freak out like a headless chicken if I cross my 9 pm deadline to return home, I will still watch this movie, no matter how bold it is! why? Curiosity! Also, for some perspective! 😀

There is still a long way to go when women will be considered as equals but the change has started. With strong women from diverse industries be it Priyanka Chopra or Malala, the stature of women is changing and changing for good! Being a very spiritual person, I always pray for liberation from the Lord, liberation from the cycle of births and deaths, but, having said that, I might want to come back to see a changed word, a world where we are treated equally, where I am treated equally. P.S. FYI Lipstick Under My Burkha stars actresses Konkona Sen Sharma, Aahana Kumrah, Ratna Pathak and Plabita Borthkur among others and it is a film that narrates multiple tales of small town women who explore their desires, sensuality, and fantasies. The film is set to release on July 21, 2017.

  1. hello.. it is a great concept. i have watched kapil sharma parkash jha episode. the way mr. parkash describe the meaning of the lipstick under my burkha ,was really amazing..He said.. lipstick is the sign of girl’s small wishes and desires, her freedom, and burkha in this title is the symbol of the boundaries created by our society…. your post is really nice.

  2. I know I am very late in reading this post, Meghana. 🙂
The issue the film deals with is very old and therefore needs to be dealt with, talked about. In spite of all the progress we have made, women still suffer and suffocate under the ‘Burka”, wondering and waiting for the time when they will be given the respect they so deserve. I missed seeing this movie when it was running in the theatres, but I hope such movies make men sit up and take notice of themselves and change their misogynist mindsets.
