If you are an Indian girl, you probably have encountered more than one scenario where your mom or an elderly aunty has scolded you for not wearing a bindi. But, now the tables have turned as more and more youngsters are adopting this innate desi style of adorning a bindi citing latest trends. But trendy or not, bindi has always been a part of Indian culture and has its own significance. It does not just make the woman look gorgeous but also improves her health in more ways than one. Read along!
Spiritual Significance:
Let me dive into the basics. There are seven chakras or seven energy centres in our body. Almost every religion has talked about it in different ways. These chakras depict different energies and are also responsible for our moods and behaviours. All the sadhana or spiritual practices like yoga and meditations are performed to keep our energies high in these centres. It is believed that the flow of energy should ideally be upwards for us to be in our best selves. The downward energy spirals us into distortions of all the emotions and negativity.
The Agya Chakra lies in between the eyebrows. It is the exact place where we apply tilak or bindis. You must have noticed that it takes a little effort for wearing a bindi and ensuring it is in the exact place between the eyebrows. So, the Agya chakra gets pressed and massaged several times while applying the Kumkum or bindi, thus stimulating it. The chakra incorporates the head, eyes, brain, pineal gland and pituitary gland.
The Agya Chakra is the centre of awareness, intuition, knowledge, and awakening (in the upward energy flow.) During meditations and certain yogic asanas, we intentionally concentrate on our Agya Chakra for greater benefits.
Health Benefits of wearing a bindi:
Several important nerves and nerve branches pass through the point between the brows thus affecting the overall improvement in the health of different organs when pressed regularly. However, the area is a sensitive one, minimum pressure massage is good enough to activate the nerves and the glands present there.
- Boosts memory and intuition
- Improves concentration
- Reduces depression
- Relieves stress and tension
- Improves eye health and ear health
- Clears up your sinuses
- Keeps your skin healthy and young
Acupressure Theory
In the Chinese practice of acupressure, this point holds a lot of importance. The point between our brows is known as The Third Eye. It is said that pressing it for a few seconds every day has tremendous health benefits. When we put the bindi or kumkum, the point gets automatically pressed and has the same effect on our health. In the acupressure massages, this point is specifically pressed for higher benefits.
Cultural Significance:
Wearing a bindi, kumkum or Chandan has a lot of reverence and cultural significance in India and in other Asian countries. Chandan has a cooling effect. When it is applied as a tilak or bindi on the forehead, especially between the brows, it helps to calm the mind.
Bindi, kumkum and Sindur are usually adorned by married Indian women and are believed to be sacred. Red bindi and Sindhur signify love, prosperity and marriage in Hinduism. These days, women opt for colourful bindis and glorify their attires complementing it furthermore. It is said that black bindis are worn to ward off evil by young girls and even boys. Men usually apply Chandan tilaka or kumkum tilaka between their brows on special cultural festivities or celebratory occasions.
Bursting the myth: Styling your bindis on western and contemporary outfits:
Bindis look good with traditional Indian attires is a thing of the past, these days girls flaunt chic bindis even with western or contemporary outfits too! Fashionistas mix and match attires and choose to wear a classic bindi with it to add an edge to their look. It not only makes the woman look beautiful but also a lot more fashionable. More and more designers, fashion influencers and bloggers are promoting it widely.
Celebrities Embrace It Too!
Indian celebrities are often spotted wearing a bindi with traditional and indo-western attires. However, following the suit, even celebrities across the world are accepting the accessory with love! Celebrities like Selena Gomez, among others, flaunted bindis with their western outfits and rocked it completely. Selena’s bindi look made headlines everywhere when she chose to wear it in several significant concerts. Her look was in the news and the bindi surely grabbed all the eyeballs.
So girls, do not shy away from wearing a bindi more often and enhance your beauty with this elegant accessory!
