Evil Under The Sun Book Review:

ABOUT THE BOOK:

Among Christie’s most popular works, the story has been adapted multiple times. It became a feature film in 1982 and was the second to star Peter Ustinov as Poirot. The TV adaptation in 2001, starring David Suchet, made perhaps the most alterations to the story.

Set at the Jolly Roger, a posh vacation resort for the rich and famous on the southern coast of England, Evil Under the Sun is one of Agatha Christie’s most intriguing mysteries. A quiet holiday at a secluded hotel in Devon is all that Hercule Poirot wants, but among his fellow guests is a beautiful and vain woman who, seemingly oblivious to her own husband, revels in the attention of another woman’s husband. When she is found strangled by powerful hands, were those hands male? Yes, they were. They were the hands of Patrick Redfern.

About the Author:

Dame Agatha Mary Clarissa Christie, Lady Mallowan, DBE was an English writer. She is known for her 66 detective novels and 14 short story collections, particularly those revolving around her fictional detectives Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple. On the release of the novel in June 1941, a reviewer for The Guardian wrote: “Is it going too far to call Mrs Agatha Christie one of the most remarkable writers of the day?” While WWII ravaged Europe, Christie’s writing was in full stride and she was publishing at least a novel a year, often two. Evil under the Sun follows the same themes as her earlier short story, Triangle at Rhodes (1936), with Poirot assuming the role of liaison between two marriages. It is, in fact, one of the Agatha Christie Seven Deadly Sins reading lists – lust.

REVIEW

Who is the murderer? Every character seemed to have a motive to kill her, from a resentful stepdaughter, a strict husband, a jilted lover, a jealous wife, a romantic rival with designs on Arlena’s husband or was it something less personal? Was she the target of a religious fanatic? Did she disturb drug-dealers using Pixy Cove (the place where she was murdered) as a drop-off point? Was she being blackmailed? The possibilities keep piling up, as do the obscure clues scattered about: a bottle was thrown out of a window, a pair of scissors on a beach, a bath drawn in the middle of the day – it all means something only to Poirot.

The inane gossip and the lack of suspense in the opening pages might wear your patience, but keep alert! Many significant clues are scattered here and there. Despite the warm sunshine and sandy beaches, Christie infuses the book with a clammy sense of foreboding, danger, and even – evil. The characterization is vivid and as always, the twists and turns keep you guessing right till the end.

This story kept me guessing and I would never have solved the case! It’s a classic Christie puzzle plot with engaging characters. Well-written and a very enjoyable read. Recommended. Especially to those who are new to Agatha Christie as a great starting point as well as established fans of her work.

Experts speak:

Evil Under The Sun gained many positive reviews and appreciations throughout, some of which are mentioned here. After summarizing the plot, Mr Disher concluded: “Miss Christie casts the shadow of guilt upon the first one and then another with such casual ease that it is difficult for the reader not to be led by the nose. Everybody is well aware that any character most strongly indicated is not a likely criminal, yet this guiding principle is forgotten when Miss Christie persuades you that you are more discerning than you really are. Then she springs her secret like a land-mine.”

In The New York Times Book Review of 19 October 1941, Isaac Anderson wrote, “The murder is an elaborately planned affair – a little too much so for credibility, in view of the many possibilities of a slip-up somewhere along the way – but Poirot’s reasoning is flawless, as it always is. Evil Under the Sun adds another to the already long list of Agatha Christie’s successful mystery tales.”

E.R. Punshon in The Guardian of 26 August 1941 briefly summed up the plot in a eulogistic piece which began, “Is it going too far to call Mrs Agatha Christie one of the most remarkable writers of the day?”

The book is also recommended by experts, if you are a true mystery and suspense lover, you will adore it too. And, if you wish to buy the book you can easily get it on Snapdeal or Amazon among other online portals. Hope this was helpful! 🙂
