Agatha Christie: Five Little Pigs Book Review

The book takes the readers in its grip from the very first mention of Hercules Poirot- the Belgian detective who makes attempts to solve the murder mysteries solely by reflecting on the testimonies of the participants. The interest added to the plot is that he did the importance of the crime scene. Agatha Christie has to her credit over 60 novels and about 14 short stories. She is known for her mystery novels and many of her books have gone on to become feature films and stories. Out of the 18 novels which were written on Poirot- Five little pigs was the last of the series.

Five Little Pigs – The story starts with the daughter (Carla) who approaches Hercules Poirot 16 years after her mother Caroline Cralle is convicted for the murder of her husband Amyas. Carla is convinced that her mother was innocent and that she also has a letter from her mother which was written before she died in the hospital. Here starts an interesting plot where Poirot is intrigued and gets involved to find the truth as the relation of Carla and her fiancé is also at stake.

For the readers who are a fan of Poirot will love the character. The story might sound like something they have read but with each character being revealed from time to time it does not bore the readers. Since it is one of the last novels it has a lot of burden on the story. Since the writer is an expert in creating the suspense along with keeping the storyline simple the novel is everything same. The most important part of the story is that it reveals everything through the testimonies which were written years ago. It is highly intriguing to see how he manages to pick things from those stories and bring them up.

It takes gripping twists as the story moves forward and different testimonies are read and analyzed. Poirot makes it clear that he does not miss out on any intricate details just to be sure that he is on the right path. The story which looks so black and white becomes twisted with many different new details which are added. Since the two major characters not available for introspection it at times becomes fascinating to see what steps the detective will take to reach a conclusion. The results are reached at the end with Carla finally satisfied with the investigation and what happens to the rest is left open.

Expert Review:

The Guardian calls it the vintage Christie, it is a murder mystery which is what Agatha does best. The stories revolve around 5 suspects and a country house, there are unexpected twists and turns which builds the tale. It has an emotional depth in the story along with emotions like hate and guilt building along. Even when you know from the starting that it is likely to lead to a new murderer it still keeps you glued to it.

Social bookshelves talk about the book comparing it with the nursery rhyme ‘this little pig’. Well, it does relate to the story where there are five pigs doing their own things stuck in one net. The books revolve around the written testimonies of 5 people which were written some 16 years ago. It is a novel written in an epistolary style and it is an interesting novel as this style is weaved into a detective novel with grace and mare.

Even though the novel is a part of the series it always finds a special mention in the writer’s name. It is able to attract the right attention and to what Poirot character is capable of. The novel is also a motion picture which is a successful one at the same time. The readers enjoy the full story and suspense is maintained throughout the novel. If you wish to indulge in an easy yet bonding content this is your book. It keeps you glued to the story and not just Poirot but all the other characters in the novel are equally interesting and they make the story look more promising.
