Anjaana Anjaani Suicide Scenes: They Were Lucky, Are You?
Well, I watched this film ‘Anjaana Anjaani’ starring Ranbir Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra recently. Yes, it was released in 2010 and I wasn’t a frequent movie-goer back then (basically, I was a child). I wanted to watch it since long, but, just couldn’t make time. Also, it wasn’t much of a priority as such. I had a bit of free time last week so I binged on this movie. I expected it to be a hardcore Bollywood rom-com, however, this film touches some extremely significant yet delicate subjects which I feel deeply about.
The summary of the film is that Ranbir Kapoor’s character has lost all his money in the stock market crash and is bankrupt. His friends and close relationships are in a mess. Priyanka Chopra’s character is heartbroken as she gets cheated on by her fiancé. They both attempt suicide several times, sometimes even together but fail. So, they decide to give life a chance and live freely for 20 days. The adventure continues…
For a Bollywood film, this is enough fodder. It’s all cool and even funny to watch some of their suicide scenes. But in real life, it is not so easy and the one who suffers is not so lucky every time. Depression is a serious issue and being suicidal is the worst feeling ever. Been there at some point and happy to be completely out of the phase now. So, all the youngsters and my teenage buddies who think that every problem or every roadblock is the end of the world, it truly is not like that. You may watch the movie if you wish to or might have watched it already. My point is, please take the right message from it. Bollywood has a huge impact on all of us, make sure we choose to take it in the right stride.
Our lives are incredibly stressful, I understand. We have so much to deal with at once and there is so much to do. With the advent of the internet and social media, a set of new problems and issues have arisen that were completely absent a decade ago. Youngsters are more stressed and depressed than ever. A few decades ago, words like ‘depression and anxiety’ were unheard of and today, every second person feels it at some level. Isn’t it scary?
My learnings:
I don’t know if you know this, but, the body and the mind are two different aspects. All the suffering and the chaos that you are experiencing is in the mind. If you finish off your body (Suicide) the mind still remains with you. So, you do not eliminate the problem, you, in turn, aggravate it! Suicide is NOT the solution.
Thanks to the YES+ workshop, this thought got reinforced yesterday and inspired me to share it with you all. Have you watched the movie? What’s your take on the suicide scenes and depression phases? Let’s discuss in the comments below!
