Five reminders in 2020 for those in their 20s

-Guest Post by Devika Biyani

Remember the teen you waiting to grow up and drive your car of life? Well, your 20’s are more about finessing those driving skills. Sure you have begun driving your car, but are you going on a solo carefree road trip yet? Do you have the exact route figured out? Maybe not. Good news? The 20s are supposed to be like that. Not being clutched with adulthood responsibilities and having outrun teen folly leaves you with many independent growth opportunities. A lot of them, really. And starting this New Year, here are five reminders in 2020 for those in their 20s to make that multitude of possibilities less daunting and more captivating.

Learn to love yourself first.

The world seems like an easier place to be when you love yourself. Standing in front of a beloved reflection in the mirror is sometimes all the warmth you need at the end of a bad day. Compassion for yourself and not bawling out on yourself is more important than you think. The moment you accept yourself is when you will celebrate your strengths and enjoy working on your weaknesses.

You’re not loitering, you’re experimenting

Much to the dismay of the 18-year-old you, you will not have your life’s blueprint handed to you at your graduation. You will start drafting that now. And while you figure your passions and design your life out, you’re bound to move back and forth. And that shouldn’t worry you. Making a wrong choice and having to go two steps back only means relocating yourself on a more correct path. It’s not starting all over. So you’re doing great and you deserve that pat on your back.

Your timeline looks just fine.

College cultivates an interdependent lifestyle. You share similar timelines, complete assignments, cry and laugh together, and live the little college adventures together. Real-world, however, will put you all on independent paths. And while it’s important to have a helping set of friends, you must not even sub cautiously let the timeline of people threaten or daunt yours. The internet, your elder figures, young prodigies who made it big early on, will all seem daunting when you design your own life out. Avoid rushing through your 20s to match a timeline. 3 idiots very well taught us that life is not a race, remember? You will figure it out, relax a little.

Do not befriend solitude.

Heartaches, disappointments, failures are all ingredients that make the 20s what they are. Having to tackle them all together will often get all too messy and baffling. In moments like this, the last thing you want to do is lock yourself up in solitude and juggle it alone. Asking for help and support, needing a little push, and grabbing a bar to pull you back up is okay. It doesn’t make you any less competent, it makes you human.

Amidst it all, you matter the most.

Yes, you must make that decision. Yes, it is very important to meet those deadlines you set for yourself. But if it is all getting too much to handle and you figure you need a break, take one. Your happiness is of prime importance. You will remember to push through and work harder, but amidst the hustle, also remember to enjoy it. Don’t let the adventures become burdensome. Take regular intervals, recharge and keep doing things that feed your soul. A happy player plays better, after all.
