Writing, like any other skill, requires practice and if you are willing to put in the required effort then you are bound to succeed. These are the few steps that can certainly help you to polish your writing skills and get better at it if followed consistently.
Note: Do not just read the sub-headlines, please read the internal paragraphs too to understand the nuances. 🙂
Read a lot of Books/Blogs:
Reading not just expands your knowledge about a certain subject but also enhances your vocabulary. It offers you a different perspective and improves your concentration. Apart from this, you also get to learn different writing styles, sentence formations, the use of phrases and a lot more. A pro tip here would be, notice how the writer is using his/her words to express the emotions, state an objective or make a declaration. Try to understand the writing style and its format.
Format your texts, and emails:
Now that you are on the process of improving your writing skills, all you need to start with is being more aware. Bringing awareness to your language be it while talking, writing a text message, email etc. will help you big time. This will help you get into the habit of constantly writing well and train your mind in this direction. I would personally recommend you to be aware of all the written transactions that you undergo, even with friends and family. Everything that you type or write should be proofread before pressing send. It may seem a lot of work in the beginning but trust me, you will soon start noticing the difference.
Start with Simple Things:
Start writing officially i.e. start with simple things if it seems overwhelming in the beginning. Simple steps can be to take up writing your journal or ‘five things that you are grateful for every day’. These are just examples, you can begin with anything you seem comfortable with. It will help you practise and improve your craft. The key is to start writing.
Understand the different writing styles:
There are different writing styles. There is a standard business language that you use professionally, casual talk that you do with friends, a certain style is followed while writing for magazines, newspapers and at digital forums. At blogging, you can be a little friendly and casual, it depends upon the type of blog you are running. I personally like to use reader-friendly language and use simple words for everyone to relate. Along with writing styles, there are different genres that one can choose to write in, for example: technical, lifestyle, feature, essay etc. You must learn about these different styles and genres to decide what you enjoy the most.
Take note of stop words:
At times, we have a tendency to use stop words too often that disrupt the flow of the written piece. Some people have the habit to use ‘like’ or ‘that’ too often which makes the content look unkempt. So proofread your writing for such little errors and ensure you avoid them as much as possible.
Use Grammarly:
Apps/websites like Grammarly help to highlight typos and silly grammatical errors that are possibly ruining our content. If you do not want to invest in the paid version, there is a free version available which you can add to your chrome extension.
If you are seriously looking out to polish your writing skills then these steps can come handy. Let me know if you use anything else apart from the above-mentioned skills to polish your writing skills. Let us help each other grow and #WriteBetter!
