Reading can help you live longer

Love reading? Congratulations! Reading can help you live longer, here’s how!

A quiet place, a rainy day or just the arrival of the weekend, book readers are always on a lookout to take out their favourite book and find a corner to indulge themselves into their favourite or not so favourite book. The benefits of reading are immense! It increases your knowledge, improves vocabulary, gives you different insights, renders perspective, develops your emotional intelligence, helps reduce stress and what not! It is just an inexpensive way to have fun and an introverts’ rescue from this world. But, did you know that books can actually help you live longer? Even I was surprised and amused when I came across the study that says reading can help you live longer and I could not resist sharing it with you.

Book lovers are going to love this post for sure! All you bibliophiles, watch out, as this update may just make your day. Recently, I read about a research and a study that states book readers live a little longer than the ones who do not prefer reading at all. But, this does not apply to newspaper articles or any other reading material, now don’t ask me why! Feel free to read the study that claims book readers who read more than 3.5 hours a week tend to live more. It suggests that reading for 3.5 hours or more can add two years to your life! How cool is that?

Reading can help you live longer
I am a happy puppy when left alone with books! 😀

According to a study by Yale University, published in the journal Social Science and Medicine, it has been proven that reading for 3.5 hours or more can add two years to your life. Researchers at the Yale University’s School of Public Health found it to be true. The study, titled – A Chapter a Day: Association of Book Reading With Longevity, which started in 2004, observed and studied the reading habits of 3,635 Americans (50 and above).

The people who participated in this research were divided into three major groups: A – people who read for 3.5 hours or more a week, people who did not read at all, and people who read for up to 3.5 hours a week. At the time of the research follow-up period, it was learnt that 33% of non-readers passed away as compared to 27% of book readers who read for more than 3.5 hours every week. The research strictly specified that that reading newspapers or magazine articles will not have the same effect.

So now it is somewhat official that reading can help you live longer, you can grab your favourite book, get some tea/coffee and head towards your reading corner! 🙂 yes, you can thank me in the comments below! 😀
