In present times, women are at par with men in every field and are shining bright with their armors rightly held. I came across this interesting interview of actress Vidya Balan where she openly spoke about various aspects that women face in their day to day life. It is a very relatable scenario and hence, decided to share it with you all so we can learn a thing or two.
While talking about juggling work and home, which is a common dilemma women face, Vidya said: “I don’t juggle. I’m no longer trying to be superwoman. I am a woman who when I’m working, I’m working, when I’m home, I’m home, when I’m chilling, I’m chilling. Sometimes, when I don’t feel like doing anything, I don’t do anything.” The actress added, “So, I think this balancing is really overrated because women are constantly asked to balance home and work and it’s unfair.”
Generally, women, especially married working women get too stressed out while trying to balance their work and home. Vidya Balan’s approach towards this is less stressful as she rightly claims that she is no superwoman. Women often find themselves exhausted with all expectations and this idea is so refreshingly relaxing.
When Vidya Balan is away from home and is not there for a special occasion with her family or her husband, she does feel guilty like any other women would do.
Talking about it, she added, “Maybe I feel guilty because I am a girl. Maybe a man wouldn’t feel the same way because you take it for granted that a man sometimes can’t make it to certain special occasions because they are working. “We (women) still feel that we should work and be there (for occasions too). But I think these unrealistic expectations are slowly shedding.”
This is such a common belief. Here Balan feels guilty for not being there, however women generally are “made” to feel guilty for not being there for special family occasions and during festivals. This is my first-hand experience. India is a land of festivals and here we have little celebrations, religious rituals almost every month. But, official holidays for the same are not allotted which in turn leads to conflicting and stressful situations for women. Like Vidya Balan rightly says unrealistic expectations needs to be shed. The ideal impressions that T.V. serials’ leading ladies impose on our society are hard to pull off by real working women.
The word feminism has gained popularity and, gender equality is one of the most urgent scenarios that our society needs to reflect on. With the growing awareness to the concept that exists here since ages, things seem to witness a positive light. However, it will take several decades to actually see major changes in the mindsets of people. The revolution has begun as people have started discussing and opening up about it.
This pinch of sexism that women face every day is not only applicable to commoners but has touched every arena. Actresses Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone, among others have spoken about the pay difference for the leading ladies. Recently, Sunny Leone in a popular interview with BBC stated that she has experienced sexism in Bollywood and added that Bollywood is more sexist than the porn industry! Women commonly face the issue everywhere even at her work place and home! Standing up against it and helping each other come up is one of the biggest solutions for gender discrimination that has shadowed our society.
Do let me know your views regarding the issue. Can’t wait to hear your thoughts…

rightly said Meghana.. it will take a lot of time and effort to actually bring out true sense of equality.. though we have come a long way.. but we need to go a lot lot more..
So true! Thanks for engaging in the discussion 🙂
“Take Charge and don’t apologize for it”Best quote you can relate with this article. We women are born as free spirits and letting us fly and letting us go will put evrything in place “A Rightful place”.
I Completely agree with Vidya Balan, We make sacrifices to make others happy, to achieve others expectations. But if one cannot have self happiness, how can you expect to make others happy?? i believe “Happiness starts with you” rest all will fall on “Rightful Places”
Thanks Anuja for your insightful feedback! 🙂
