Yoga for Healthy Skin | Heal skin problems with Yoga
Yoga is the only science that deals with the body, breath and mind. It balances the three prakrutis and doshas that all of us humans have β Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Contrary to popular belief, yoga is not just for the body but also for the mind and soul. It is not just about performing some stretches in the name of asanas but the scope of yoga is wide. As a certified yoga teacher, I studied the subject in-depth and gained a lot of insights about how our body works.
Yoga asanas, pranayamas, kriyas, and meditation techniques, brings harmony and equanimity in one self.
It is possible to heal certain ailments be it physical or mental with regular practice of yoga and Ayurveda. Skin is no different; it is the largest organ of our body. No matter how much we deny, skin health contributes to good looks majorly. Healthy, glowing skin is not just visually appealing but is considered a sign of a healthy individual.
Skin issues like dullness, acne, among others occur due to multiple reasons. Keeping your body active, performing certain asanas and pranayamas regularly, eating healthy food and maintaining a healthy lifestyle can certainly help to heal your skin and bring back that healthy glow.
Note: All these Yoga Poses are to be done on an empty stomach. There are contraindications to every pose. So please consult a certified yoga teacher before practising them. Please also consider your physical health condition before doing complicated asanas.
Remember, “Yoga is not just about touching your toes, it is about what you learn while going down!”
Now, having stated that let’s learn about a few asanas that will help your skin to become healthier while making your body fitter! Here’s Yoga for Healthy Skin!
Matsyasana:
Matsyasana helps to direct the blood flow towards the face and the head. All the asanas that improve the blood circulation and help direct the blood flow rightly are good for the skin. Matsyasana is indeed great for the back muscles, digestive and respiratory organs along with the spine health. One of the main reasons for acne is indigestion, so perform asanas that improve your digestive organs like this one to speed up the healing process.
Matsyasana with Padmasana as its base:
Bhujangasana:
Bhujangana, popularly known as the cobra pose is again one of the easiest yet profound yoga poses that offer multiple benefits. It not just manages to keep your skin healthy but also keeps your body weight in check i.e. it helps to balance your body weight. It is great for your spine health, thyroid and muscle health.
Shishuasna: Child pose
Shishu Asana or child pose is again one of the easiest yet significant asanas. It calms the mind and relaxes the body. The asana offers a slight pressure and stimulation to the organs in the stomach cavity which results in its improved functioning. Blood circulation is regulated thus skin is benefitted.
Sarvangasana:
Sarvangasana is known as the queen of all the asanas. The pose can be achieved through regular practice. The major benefit of this pose is it that our thyroid and parathyroid glands get massaged and stimulation. Thyroids and Parathyroid glands are known to regularize hormones in our system. So, everyone who suffer from hormonal acne and skin issues, this is a very good solution for the same. Also, thanks to the inverted posture, the blood rushes to the upper areas, our vital organs, face, head and to all the vital glands which further aids to heal our skin naturally.
Vipritkarni Mudra:
Viprit Karni Mudra is a leading practice of Sarvangasana. All those are not able to perform Sarvangasana, Viprit Karni Mudra is indeed a very good option, to begin with. It gives almost the same benefits of Sarvangasana. This is a very good practice for all the reproductive issues that women face. Viprit Karni Mudra is the solution for Varicose Veins.
Halasana:
If one can perform Viprit Karni Mudra and Sarvangasana properly then it will be easier for them to practise Halasana. Halasana is the plough pose. This pose helps us immensely to improve spine health and blood circulation. The thyroid glands are benefitted, the respiratory, and digestive organs are stimulated thus they function better. It calms the mind and soothes the muscles.
Shirsasana:
This is one of my favourite asanas that is super effective and has tremendous health benefits. Popularly known as the headstand, it is the king of all the asanas and rightly so! Shirsana makes your body completely inverted due to which your blood rushes towards your vital organs and glands towards your head. It removes all the stagnant toxins that are stuck in the body and also improves digestion. The asana also is great for your muscular and spinal health. It helps you improve your balance and makes you centred.
Pranayamas and Kriyas:
Pranayamas help in calming the mind. It helps to keep your thoughts positive. It manages to centre your wandering mind resulting in providing you peace and helps you get rid of stress. Thus your mental health drastically improves which results in positive physical health. You do not get stress acne and get a natural glow when you are happy. People of Pitta Prakruti tend to get a lot of red-ish stress acne. Those can be reduced and completely avoided with regular practice of sheetali and shitkari pranayamas.
Sheetali and Shitkari Pranayama
Pimples and other skin infections like rashes tend to also occur due to oily skin, clogged pores which are again roots to excess heat in the body. This heat can be reduced or dealt effectively with the help of pranayamas like Sheetali and Shitkari.
Kapalbhaati
The name Kapaalbhati means β Kapal means forehead and bhaati means brightener. If practised regularly, this kriya helps to improve skin health and brings a glow on the face.
Kapalbhati kriya is one of the most popular practises and is super effective for healthy glowing skin. In Kapalbhati you forcefully expel out air and the inhalation is passive. It has a lot of health benefits, one of the major ones being clearing the sinus passage and the respiratory track. The blockages in the nose cavities get cleansed and the air passage is cleared with regular practice of Kapalbhaati. It also improves digestion and improves the health of all the organs in the chest and stomach cavities.
Yoga for Healthy Skin: All these practices if done regularly and with correct technique under the guidance of a trained yoga teacher can bring fruitful results. However, balance in other areas like an adequate amount of healthy food and water intake, good sleeping patterns also help speed up the process.
